Well, it’s official. After much speculation about infidelity, our favorite May-December romance with Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore is kaput. But did those affairs that Ashton reportedly had signal a no-turning-back end to the marriage?
In 2010, we started hearing tales of Ashton’s extramarital affairs. First it was Brittany Jones, who claimed she and Ashton “made love on the couch” one day when Demi wasn’t home. Then, earlier this year, we learned that Ashton got drunk and had sex with another woman, Sara Leal, who subsequently sold her story to Us Magazine.
When many Hollywood couples split, there is often a joint statement issued about how much they still respect and cherish one another, etc. But not this time. Demi made sure she was the one to issue her own release to People, stating:
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton… As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.
This solo statement has reporters thinking it confirms there was, in fact, infidelity in the marriage. Not that the reason for their breakup is anyone’s business, but it’s a little sad that this relationship didn’t work out. Women everywhere were inspired by Demi when she and Ashton started dating because she showed us that age didn’t really matter. But just a few weeks ago, the Today show panelists speculated that this very thing–age and “gravity”–could be to blame for Ashton’s disloyalty. Regardless of the fact that Demi still looks hot at age 48 today, let’s be clear: A woman’s body is never to blame for her husband running around with other women. Some guys are just destined to be assholes. It’s worth remembering that even couples who are the same age cheat on each other too. And sometimes divorce after infidelity is just non-negotiable.
